Tlacolula, Land of Mescal
Tlacolula's church (left) is conveniently located right next to the market entrance (right)
A mere 24 miles east of Oaxaca City, Tlacolula is a sun-drenched city famous for its Mescal, a spirit far more popular than Tequila in this region. Many shops in an around the city offer 24 flavors of the spirit, and travelers frequently stroll from shop to shop getting free samples on the way.
The main activity in town comes from its famous traditional market, the oldest in the state, which also doubles as the principal place for socializing.
Conveniently located next to the market, Tlacolula’s main church displays a surprisingly distinguished interior. Scholars often come to this remote church for its collection of statutes representing almost every major saint of the catholic faith.
