The Northern Lands
Oaxaca's northern landscape is at time breathtaking (snapshot from Oaxaca DVD)
The northern part of Oaxaca state is home to some of the most breathtaking landscapes of the continent, with dense forests of tall oaks gradually giving way to patchy woods of short pine and oaks when approaching the valley of Oaxaca.
Travelers typically venture there for camping in its high mountains. Biking and hiking offer countless marvellous views. Fishing and boating is also quite enjoyable on its several glassy lakes, or on its two tropical rivers.
While strolling the area, it is quite common to cross villages that haven't changed for centuries, specially those nested a mile high on the Northern Sierra, like Benito Juarez or Cuajimoloyas. There, the scent of pine is everywhere, and its billowing clouds melt with the plane far below.
And of course there are the local markets. Though not as large and animated as more South, transactions are more likely to be conducted in ancient indigenous dialects.
