Streets and Boutiques of Oaxaca

Oaxaca's pedestrian streets are packed with old colonial homes

For many visitors, the best way to enjoy Oaxaca city is simply to stroll its pedestrian streets and many plazas, pausing to look at its famed handicraft stores or simply to enjoy the sun at a terrace of a cafe.

The "Andador Turistico" - the touristic boulevard - is the main commercial artery of the city. A charming pedestrian street going northward from the cathedral, it is paved with Oaxaca green stones, and packed with old colonial homes, several shopping galleries, countless restaurants, and the most distinguished jewelry and handicraft stores in the city.

Andado Turistico ends up in the colorful plaza of the Santo Domingo Temple, famous for its distinctive maguey, or agave, garden and pedestrian squares.

This arch of the aqueduct is now a courtyard entrance.

Los Arquitos is a small neighborhood on the northern side of the city, famous for being crossed in the middle by an 18th century aqueduct. What is most entertaining about this neighborhood is the way the residents have adapted to the aqueduct, turning its walls and arches into courtyard walls, gateways, balconies, sidewalks, and even a restaurant entrance.
